A woman believed to be in her 60s was found stranded on a roof top at
Esigie Street between First and Second East Circular in Benin City, the Edo
State capital, causing bewilderment in the area.
The woman whose name could not be obtained appeared exhausted leaving
onlookers, who had gathered in clusters wondering how she got to roof top while
others concluded that she was a witch.
The woman was said to be discovered at about 4am by some vigilante men
who raised the alarm and woke up residents within the area. She was however
brought down and taken to Esigie Police Station along with her personal
belongings, giving the impression that she was returning from a
He said residents came out in large numbers to ask her questions on how
she got to the roof top of the building pointing out that upon inquiry the
woman said she was passing by to a market in the area when she got stranded on
a roof top.
Another resident in the area said: “I was in my room early this
morning when I heard the vigilante people interrogating her. I couldn’t come
out because I thought it was a thief they caught. Around 6am when I
eventually came out, a large crowd had gathered catching a glimpse of the
woman.”
Another eyewitness said, “When we got here we saw the woman on top of
the aluminum zinc and we asked her how she got to the roof top she said
she was coming from her organization. I believe the woman is a witch and
God has exposed her.”
Attempts by LEADERSHIP to get comments from the woman at the Esigie
Police Station where she was taken to were unsuccessful. While the Edo state
Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Noble Uwoh could not be reached by the time
of going to press.
